Twitter is a social media platform founded in 2006 that allows users to share short messages, known as "tweets," of up to 280 characters. The platform is known for its fast-paced, real-time nature, making it a popular source for breaking news, trending topics, and viral content. Twitter has over 330 million monthly active users and is available in over 40 languages.

Twitter is used by individuals, businesses, celebrities, politicians, and organizations to connect with their followers and share information. Users can follow other accounts to see their tweets in their home timeline, and can also use hashtags to join in on trending conversations. Twitter also offers features such as direct messaging, lists, and moments, which curate the best tweets on a particular topic.

In recent years, Twitter has faced challenges with issues such as misinformation, harassment, and hate speech. The platform has implemented various measures to combat these issues, such as labeling misleading tweets, suspending or banning abusive accounts, and partnering with third-party fact-checkers. Despite these challenges, Twitter remains a popular platform for communication and information sharing.

Twitter is an online social media and networking service that is owned and operated by X Corp., an American company and the legal successor of Twitter, Inc. Users of Twitter who reside outside of the United States are legally served by Twitter International Unlimited Company, which is based in Ireland and thus makes these users subject to Irish and European Union data protection regulations.

The creation of Twitter dates back to March 2006 when Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams launched the platform in July of that year. Its previous parent company, Twitter, Inc., was headquartered in San Francisco, California. On October 27, 2022, the prominent business magnate Elon Musk acquired Twitter for an impressive $44 billion, thereby gaining control of the platform. On December 20, 2022, Musk declared that he would relinquish his position as CEO as soon as a successor was identified.

Following the takeover, Musk revitalized Twitter Blue, increasing its subscription cost to $8 per month and introducing novel functionalities such as the "blue checkmark" verification previously reserved for high-profile users. On February 8, 2023, Twitter disclosed that users of Twitter Blue could post tweets as long as 4000 characters and could also edit their posts. These are the notable events in the history of Twitter as of my knowledge cutoff of September 2021.
