Indian parliament elected Jagdeep Dhankhar as its 14th Vice President

 

National Democratic Alliance Jagdeep Dhankhar, the former West Bengal Governor, defeated Margaret Alva, joint opposition’s nominee in the Vice President election.

 

Jagdeep Dhankhar won with a thumping majority by securing 528 votes against Alva's 182 votes. 725 parliamentarians cast their votes, which round up to 92.9 per cent voting in the vice-presidential election. However, 15 votes were found to be invalid, said returning officer Utpal Kumar Singh.

 

The parties which extended their support to cross the 500-mark include the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Shiv Sena and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

 

Dhankar, 71, will take oath to office on August 11, a day after the tenure of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to expire.

  • Hails from a remote village in Rajasthan's Kithana in the Jhunjhunu district.
  • Completed his school at Sainik School in Chittorgarh.
  • Graduated with B.Sc in Physics from Maharaja’s College at the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur.
  • Joined LLB course in 1978 at the University of Rajasthan and completed his education in the year 1979. Later enrolled in the Bar Council of Rajasthan as an advocate.
  • Before entering politics, he was a successful lawyer, having practiced in both the Supreme Court and High Court.

 

Dhankhar entered politics in 1989 and was elected as a Lok Sabha member from Jhunjhuna on the Janata Dal ticket. In the year 1990 Dhankar served as the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs as a part of collation government headed by Chandra Shekar. In the subsequent years, he joined the Congress and served as an MLA from Rajasthan's Kishangarh between 1993 and 1998.

 

Dhankhar next political stop was the Bharatiya Janata Party which he joined in 2003. On July 30, 2019, Dhankhar was appointed as the West Bengal Governor, a post he held till July 17, 2022, a day after he was named NDA's candidate for the Vice Presidential election.
